Will 227 acres in Santa Monica really become a new park, or will it be converted into high density housing?
The City of Santa Monica has moved forward with Phase 2 of its public engagement plan for the redevelopment of the Santa Monica Airport site, which is slated to close operations by the end of 2028. This phase, part of a comprehensive, multi-year effort, focuses on gathering community input to shape the future of the 227-acre property, with plans leaning toward creating a substantial public space, potentially a large park. But more likely high density housing, given economic pressures and the Council's propensity toward high density housing.
During Phase 1 over the summer, nearly 2,000 residents shared their vision for the site, providing feedback through surveys, the project's website, and local events. Building on these insights, Phase 2, launched on September 18, has two segments: refining and prioritizing community suggestions (Phase 2A), followed by developing guiding principles (Phase 2B). These principles will be presented to the City Council by January 2025.
Residents are encouraged to visit the project's website until October 16 to view a virtual training, complete a survey, and help prioritize project ideas. Additionally, micro-grants are available for community members interested in hosting listening sessions.
By fall 2025, the city aims to have a preferred redevelopment scenario that will guide the environmental review process under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). The airport's closure at the end of 2028 will pave the way for construction, transitioning the space into a community-driven landmark.
