Shooting at Santa Monica College Satellite Campus Critically Injures One Woman. SMC Closed October 15th

A workplace shooting, one male employee shot a woman who also worked for SMC

A shooting at Santa Monica College (SMC) on the evening of October 14, 2024, left a female college employee critically injured. The incident occurred near the KCRW building at the Center for Media and Design, located at 1660 Stewart Street, which is a satellite campus of SMC.

Multiple units from the College Police and the Santa Monica Police Department responded to the scene. The victim, suffering from a gunshot wound, was transported to UCLA Hospital in Westwood. According to a news release from Santa Monica College, the shooting took place just before 10 p.m.

Officials have described the incident as “workplace violence” and confirmed that it was not a random act. The shooter remains at large. For the safety and well-being of the community, all SMC campuses are closed on Tuesday, October 15, 2024. An email was sent to faculty and staff, cancelling even online extension classes for the day.

The LA Times reported Tuesday morning that the employee remains in critical condition. The shooter, Durrell Dean and his victim were both custodians. Dean committed attempted murder in 2011, and assault with a deadly weapon in 2019.

After a standoff with police in El Segundo, Dean took his own life with a firearm. She remains in the hospital in critical condition.
