Car Hangs Over the Edge of Parking Structure 4 in Downtown Santa Monica Friday

The incident happened on 4th street at 4 pm on October 4, on the 4th floor of parking structure 4. Coincidence?

Just when you think you’re having a tough day, imagine this: On the afternoon of Friday, October 4, 2024, an unidentified woman experienced a close call that could have ended in disaster. Driving her SUV in Parking Structure 4 in Downtown Santa Monica, she somehow managed to bypass the wire rope barriers designed to prevent vehicles from going over the edge of the structure’s fourth floor. The SUV came dangerously close to plunging off the side, leaving it precariously perched on the edge of the parking structure.

The incident occurred just before 4 PM, and the scene quickly drew attention from passersby. The Santa Monica Fire Department responded with four units, acting swiftly to prevent what could have been a catastrophic event. Firefighters worked carefully to secure the vehicle and drag it away from the ledge, averting a potential tragedy.

Remarkably, no one was injured in the incident, and the driver was safely removed from the vehicle. However, due to the location and time of day, 4th Street, a busy thoroughfare in the area, had to be closed for two hours during the Friday rush hour. The closure caused significant traffic delays, but authorities emphasized that the situation could have been far worse.

In the end, the swift actions of the fire department and the fact that no injuries occurred made this a fortunate outcome—though likely one of the worst days imaginable for the driver involved.
