Santa Monica Homeowner Creates Device to Deter Homeless From Entering Garages

When a homeless man enters the garage to camp or to pee, a blue light flashes and a chirp sounds, encouraging him to leave humanely.

Santa Monica, CA-As the homeless crisis continues to escalate in Santa Monica, local resident Stephen McMahon has taken matters into his own hands, developing a unique device aimed at deterring homeless individuals from settling near his property.

McMahon, frustrated by the growing presence of homeless encampments within a 20-block radius of his home, invented a "diversion security" device known as the Blue Chirper. The device is designed to activate when it detects motion, emitting a chirping sound accompanied by a bright blue light.

According to McMahon, the blue light is specifically chosen because it mimics daylight, creating an environment that is uncomfortable for those seeking shelter. He also claims that the light makes it difficult for individuals to see their veins, potentially deterring drug use in the vicinity.

The problem: Homeless man enters garage to urinate, and perhaps to campout for a few days.

McMahon's ultimate goal is to expand the Blue Chirper's reach throughout his neighborhood, hoping to discourage the homeless from staying in the area. "I want to push these people out of here and bring Santa Monica back to the way it was," McMahon stated, expressing his desire to reclaim his community from what he sees as a growing safety and sanitation issue.

While McMahon's efforts reflect a personal response to the crisis, his approach highlights the broader tensions between residents and the challenges of addressing homelessness in Santa Monica. As the city continues to grapple with finding solutions, McMahon's device represents one of the many controversial methods employed by frustrated locals seeking to protect their neighborhoods.
