New York Mayor Eric Adams Accused of Taking $10,000,000 in bribes from Foreign Nationals in Exchange for Favors, as he rose to Mayor

Adams allegedly began accepting improper benefits after becoming Brooklyn Borough President in 2014, including luxury international travel

Mayor Eric Adams is accused of accepting bribes, including $123,000 worth of free flights and luxury perks, from foreign nationals in exchange for favors, according to a federal indictment unsealed by Manhattan prosecutors on Thursday.

The five-count indictment-the first ever against a sitting New York City mayor-outlines a decade-long pattern of alleged corruption by Adams, including the fraudulent acquisition of $10 million in public campaign funds.

The indictment follows a grand jury's decision to charge Adams with conspiracy, wire fraud, and bribery as part of a long-running federal investigation.

According to the 57-page document, Adams began accepting improper benefits after becoming Brooklyn Borough President in 2014, including luxury international travel from wealthy foreign businessmen and at least one Turkish government official seeking to influence him.

"As Adams's prominence and power grew, his foreign-national benefactors sought to cash in on their corrupt relationships with him, particularly when, in 2021, it became clear that Adams would become New York City's mayor," the indictment states. It alleges that Adams provided favorable treatment in exchange for the illicit benefits he received.

The indictment details a scheme in which Adams allegedly used these bribes to fund his 2021 mayoral campaign while enjoying perks like free hotel stays, flights on Turkey's national airline, and meals at upscale restaurants. In return, Adams is accused of pressuring city officials to waive inspections and approve permits for the Turkish Consulate in Manhattan.

Adams himself tweeted that he has been targeted because he vocally opposed the Biden Harris administration's policy of resettling 250,000 foreign migrants in New York City, displacing low income people to do so.
