Danish Navy Frigate Rescues Two German Men After Plane Crash Into the Atlantic Near Greenland

"In the sea southwest of Qaqortoq Greenland, the two pilots had entered the life raft after the emergency landing..."

The Danish Navy rescued two men from a life raft after ditching their small plane in the North Atlantic Ocean. The HDMS Triton is an oceanic patrol frigate, about 368 feet in length. The two men were en route from Canada to Southern Greenland. The following statement is from the Danish Arctic Command's Facebook page:

Monday 29 July at At 12.17 Flight Information Center Nuuk and Arctic Command received a MAYDAY call from a German-registered aircraft en route from Canada to Narsarsuaq in South Greenland.

The crew from the Air Transport Wing on the Challenger aircraft quickly found the aircraft's position and were able to follow it in the air as it plunged towards the sea.

In the sea southwest of Qaqortoq, the two pilots had entered the life raft after the emergency landing, and were thus able to wave to the crew of the Danish Air Force Challenger aircraft, which flew over the position and remained in the area.

The HDMS Triton had previously set course for the life raft and within just 30 minutes rescued the two people in TRITON's inflatable boat (RHIB).

The further case processing and investigation must now be handled by the Greenland Police, and the Arctic Command has no further comments on the case.

The rescue operation is the perfect example of excellent cooperation between the headquarters of the Arctic Command in Nuuk and the units deployed by the Air Force and the Navy under the leadership of the Arctic Command.

The crews of the Danish Air Force Challenger plane and TRITON acted resolutely, and the cooperation ensured the survival of the two people.

At the same time, thanks must be given to the other authorities who were involved in the rescue operation – Naviair and the Greenland Police.

The Thetis-class ocean patrol vessels or ocean patrol frigates, are a class of large patrol vessels built for the Royal Danish Navy. The class includes four ships, all built and commissioned in the early 1990s. The ships' tasks are mainly maintenance of sovereignty, search and rescue, fishery inspection and support to local (mainly Greenlandic) authorities. The operation areas are normally Greenland and the Faroe Islands, but the vessels also operate near Iceland on transit between Greenland and the Faroe Islands, and near Denmark.
