Santa Monica City Councilmember Lana Negrete Announces that She Has Breast Cancer

City Councilmember Lana Negrete has announced that she has breast cancer. “I was diagnosed with cancer 14 days ago.... it's Estrogen positive HER2 Negative breast cancer in my right breast and in 2 of my lymph nodes in that breast,” she wrote.

Negrete, one of 7 City Councilmembers, was appointed to the council in 2021 and elected to a 4 year term in 2022. She also runs a music store in Santa Monica, and is married with children. She is also Mayor Pro Tem. Her Facebook post reads as follows:

I have entered into the PHD program of "Acceptance of What is" with a minor in "like a boss with lots of humor" - from the "University of Life" at the "Fuck Cancer" satellite location; right off "Appreciate life Canyon" and "God had a sense of humor Blvd"...

Never thought I'd be getting this PHD; although I feared it. Now that I'm in the program I'm embracing it because I see the graduating classes before me and can't wait to be the commencement speaker at the graduates behind me (although I hope it's a much smaller class) . I have many professors and tutors and the best group of sorority sisters and brothers - the cafeteria food is nutrient dense and healing and my sense of humor is in tact.

I visualize life and see life in parodies and metaphors that present in my mind in a theatrical way. It's what makes me just crazy enough to not keel over when life throws you curve balls; I can see the humor and the light at the end of any tunnel.

I was diagnosed with cancer 14 days ago....its been quite the journey since as I am still in the discovery phase. What we know now is it's Estrogen positive HER2 Negative breast cancer in my right breast and in 2 of my lymph nodes in that breast. We will know more after surgery eventually.

I'm not secretive about it; I believe in the power of prayer and also you never know who may offer you that piece of info or connection you needed. I welcome it all and can take ans leave what I want. I will document my journey in hopes it gives a voice and comfort to someone else, educate someone to help spread preventative opportunities and to advocate for a better healthcare system to make people first.
