Dianne Feinstein died of extreme old age Thursday evening September 28th. She was 90 years old and in poor overall health. Her death clears the way for Dem. Gov. Gavin Newsom to appoint her replacement, to serve until the end of 2024. Newsom has pledged to appoint a black female to the seat.
She had said she would not run for another term, so there are a number of people who have announced for her seat. Most prominent among them is Oakland congresswoman Barbara Lee, who is black and female, but she is 73 years of age. Meghan Markle is not formally running, but is rumored to have called Newsom and asked for the seat. Adam Schiff is running for the seat, as is Katie Porter, but they are the wrong color.
LA Mayor Karen Bass is the right color and gender. She has proven herself as mayor of Los Angeles, so she is the logical choice for Newsom to appoint for the open seat. San Francisco Mayor London Breed is also a possibility. Both black female California mayors have denied that they are at all interested in Feinstein's senate seat.
Feinstein served as a San Francisco Supervisor from 1969 to 1978, then as mayor of San Francisco. She was elected to the Senate in 1992. She ran unsuccessfully for Gov. of California in 2004 against Pete Wilson. She served in the Senate until her death yesterday.
On October 11, 2002, Senator Feinstein voted in favor of the resolution authorizing war with Iraq. Later, she said she had been misled by the Bush administration and bad intelligence.
Feinstein died at her home in Washington, DC, on September 28, 2023, at the age of 90. Most people had kind words for the departed. But not everyone.
"Dianne Feinstein had many notable accomplishments and firsts, but alas, most will remember her as a ghastly megalomaniac who desperately clung to her greed and narcissism until the very end. a masterclass in ruining your own legacy. good riddance." tweeted Morgan J.
"Diane Feinstein spent her entire career auctioning off power to the Chinese Communist Party. She made hundreds of millions of dollars selling out her constituents and America. Feinstein was reprimanded repeatedly for her insider trading. Today, she's dead. Good riddance," tweeted Brenden Dilley.
