Fairy Princesses, Mermaid Models and Unicorn Uniforms Seen on Santa Monica's Third Street Promenade

Have you ever wondered how to find a fairy, mermaid or unicorn in LA? "That motherf@@@er is not real," you say? Then you need to visit the Sparkl Fairy Couture store just off Santa Monica's Third Street Promenade on Santa Monica Blvd.

Wednesday night, the Sparkl Fashion store in Santa Monica conducted its annual Mermont Show at the Mondrian Hotel's Skybar. Few events are more fun for me to photograph, since the store specializes in mermaid merchandise, fairy couture and unicorn uniforms.

Gabriella Iwalani Hall aka Gsparkl or Gabi grew up in Lihue, Hawaii. Hall is the girl genius behind the unique store. She's the girl-boss who dropped out of design school, to rewrite the rules of intimate apparel for the post-Victoria's Secret age. Hall made fairies, unicorns and mermaids cool for adult women.

She gave us a 90 second version of her history while thanking folks for coming and participating. "Ever since I was a little girl, I always dreamed of having a sparkle fashion empire," she says. Hall moved to Los Angeles "to follow that dream. Within 9 months, I started this company. And I quit college (FIDM) with a clear vision in mind, I wanted to sparkle the universe."

"So I was posed with the question of how do I do that. I decided I was going to do that by creating the fairy princess unicorn lifestyle, and make it my life, my dream, and my passion. And here we are.

"I want to thank all of my amazing fairy models for coming out today, and thank my team and I wouldn't be here today without you guys. Now I have the honor of announcing the queen of mermaids for the past 20 years, Hannah Mermaid." Aka Hannah Fraser.
