Election Results of the California June 7 Primary For Santa Monica

For almost all offices, candidates must run in the general election in November even if they garnered more than 50 percent of the vote.

June 10, 2022 - Results from the primary election that was held on June 7 are still preliminary as vote-by-mail ballots still have several days to reach their destination. But results are available from the 580,358 vote-by-mail ballots already received and the 242,187 votes cast at vote centers. The following data from the California Secretary of State and the Los Angeles County Registrar/Recorder are as of June 9 and June 8 respectively.

For almost all offices, candidates must run in the general election in November even if they garnered more than 50 percent of the vote. Only candidates runing for Superintendent of Public Instruction or those in special elections can win outright in the primary with over 50 percent of the vote.

Even if there are only two candidates in the primary, both must run again in the general election.

Because California employs open primaries, in which no party is guaranteed a place in the general election, it is interesting to note that Republicans nevertheless managed to attain a place in the general election for nearly statewide offices.
