Few have dared to use public transportation during the Covid-19 crisis.
It was perhaps predictable, but two Santa Monica Big Blue Bus drivers have tested positive for Coronavirus. aHi David Transit Services Director Ed King confirms.
"It's a difficult time for transportation agencies across the globe including Big Blue Bus. Our team is deeply dedicated to the work we do to provide safe and reliable commuting services for our region," said Director of Transit Services, Ed King. "We remain committed to public health practices that ensure the health and safety of our customers and our bus operators. We know our bus system is an essential service that people rely on and we are closely monitoring routes to continue to meet those needs. Our hearts are with our two employees and their families and are grateful they are both recovering under quarantine."
Public transportation has been less desirable during the current international Covid-19 crisis. New York has experienced about half of the Coronavirus cases in the United States, and it is believed to be due to the widespread use of subway, bus and other forms of public transportation.
Tests show the Coronavirus persists for several hours on metal surfaces, such as those in public transportation.
Hospital staff, grocery store clerks and the elderly depend on public transportation. Recognizing this, bus transportation systems in New York, Los Angeles and Santa Monica have made bus riding free during the national coronavirus emergency.
Transit systems on the East Coast are having trouble finding sufficient drivers, even with the much lower number of passengers. Drivers frequently call in sick.
