From Pico and Sawtelle to Bundy and Wilshire, the lights were out across a wide section of West Los Angeles Friday night.
The blackout began around 7:39 pm PST. The power outage reportedly affected an area of around 4 square miles, ranging from pricey homes, to extremely pricey homes.
Traffic officers directed traffic through dark intersections such as Sepulveda and Olympic during the power outage. At Bundy and Olympic, the Bed Bath and Beyond was illuminated, apparently by its own generator. Other businesses were totally without power, at 9:20 pm PST.
A DWP spokesman said a possible cause was a Mylar balloon, adding that three electrical vaults had been affected. "Our current estimated time of restoration is six hours," said the spokesman.
The City of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, or DWP, provides power to the area, which includes about 200,000 residents. The DWP said 13,000 of its customers were affected.
Update: Electricity was restored to all areas of West Los Angeles, by 6 am Saturday morning.
