How Heaven Must Look at Night -- A Evening of Art and Culture in Las Vegas

"Las Vegas looks the way you'd imagine heaven must look at night." --Chuck Palahniuk, in "Invisible Monsters"

Even though Edible Skinny spends quite a good amount in the desert oasis of Las Vegas (this is due to the fact that my official residence is here (when not on the road...)), I sometimes forget to cover the blooming cultural scene in my City of Lights!

So because the Glitter Gulch deserves to be trophied as much as any other city out there, here's some AWESOME art and culture (and non-gaming) ways to experience the CREATIVITY that Sin City has to offer!

FIRST FRIDAY LAS VEGAS

On the first Friday of January, we started our night of CREATIVITY at one of Las Vegas' largest community events: First Friday Las Vegas. This outdoor art party is an ever growing community festival in Downtown Las Vegas fostering creativity and culture. This artist inspired event strives to constantly and emphatically seek, discover, inspire, and explore creativity in all its forms.

Featuring art, music, food, and much more; you never know what's going to happen at a night at First Friday. You could see a street artist spray paint his next masterpiece, perhaps watch the event get live streamed from Jimmy Kimmel Live (who's original hometown in Sin City), or even meet Mowgli the Dinosaur, a giant 10 foot T. Rex bedazzled with 150,000 rhinestones by BlingOSaurus!

FRIENDS! THE MUSICAL PARODY

After our fill of the DTLV art scene it was off to check out FRIENDS! The Musical Parody, a hilarious new musical that lovingly lampoons TV's Friends. This show celebrates the wacky misadventures of your favorite group of 20-something pals as they navigate the pitfalls of work, life, and love in 1990s Manhattan! It's a seemingly typical day at New York's only coffee shop, Central Perk, until an unexpected runaway bride with an iconic haircut enters the picture and kicks the whole gang out of second gear! Definitely not Cirque du Soleil, this production arrived at the D Las Vegas via an extended run in the New York Off Broadway scene at St. Luke's Theatre.

The musical features the six main characters from the cast: Ross, Rachel, Chandler, Joey, Phoebe, and Monica (who was played by standout Erin Baltsar). The delightfully naughty new confection recreates our favorite moments from all 10 years of Friends (will they won't they kiss moments, tons of coffee consumed, pivoting, and (of course) a turkey on Monica's head) through an uncensored, fast-paced, music-filled romp. We laughed! We cried! We Unagi-ed!

CULTURE & CANNABIS LAS VEGAS

We then ended the night with some art and sticky! Culture & Cannabis Las Vegas is a celebration of the bridge between intertwining world of marijuana and art! This is one of those underground events that is so hip they don't have a website, just an Instagram page... Located at CMXX event space in the 18b Art District, the night involves a slew of up and coming hip hop acts, a fashion show by Omni Models, DJs, and up to 40 cannabis art, non-profit, ancillary, and apparel brands. Just note, that Culture & Cannabis does not promote the open consumption of cannabis as Social Use is still illegal in Nevada (though it is coming soon real real soon)!!!
