Affordable housing to be conveniently built near the Huntley Hotel
The owners of Santa Monica's historic Fairmont Miramar Hotel and Bungalows on Ocean and Wilshire unveiled new plans for a major expansion. At least they no longer call for a 21-story tower, reports Curbed LA website. https://la.curbed.com/2018/4/12/17228878/santa-monica-miramar-hotel-expansion-renderings
The sleek contemporary design will be only 130 feet tall. Still, the project is major. It will include 312 remodeled guest rooms, 60 market-rate condos, 475 underground parking spaces. At least they saved Senator Jones' ficus tree. Jones, the founder of Santa Monica, owned the property in the late 19th Century.
A separate affordable apartment complex with at least 30 units would be built behind the Miramar on Second Street, right next-door to a competing hotel, the Huntley.
The Miramar was owned by Dell of Dell Computers fame. His people circulated a flier demonizing the owner of the Huntley hotel, which is a little taller than the Miramar.
About half of the site will be dedicated to "food and beverage" outlets accessible to the public on the ground-floor. Plans also call for a 14,000-square-foot garden at the corner of Wilshire and Ocean.
