Academy Award nominee Ruth Negga Gets US-Ireland Alliance's Oscar Wilde Awards

Academy Award nominee Ruth Negga will be honored at the US-Ireland Alliance's Oscar Wilde Awards on 23 February at J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot in Santa Monica. The actress, who grew up in Limerick, Ireland, will be honored along with Caitriona Balfe, Glen Hansard, Zachary Quinto, and Martin Short. Abrams will emcee. It has also been announced that Chris Pine and Catherine O'Hara will be presenters.

For her role in Loving, Ruth's accolades include Academy Award, Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award nominations. She stars opposite Joel Edgerton in the Jeff Nichols' film, which was inspired by the documentary, The Loving Story. The film follows Mildred and Richard Loving, the couple behind the pivotal 1967 civil rights case, Loving v. Virginia. The interracial couple married in June 1958 and as a result were arrested and sentenced to a year in the state penitentiary- a sentence that was suspended on the condition that they be exiled from the state of Virginia. The couple spent the next nine years fighting, determined to be together in their home state. Loving v. Virginia became a landmark victory in the Supreme Court, as well as an important step forward in the Civil Rights battle.

The US-Ireland Alliance hosted several advance screenings of Loving, including one with Ruth in Beverly Hills. Alliance founder Trina Vargo said, "We're thrilled to honor Ruth. I watched the film several times at our various screenings and found new subtleties with each viewing. The brilliance of Ruth's performance lies in the nuances. It's a role that requires the conveyance of emotion as much through a look as through dialogue."

Upcoming, Ruth will be seen starring as 'Tulip O'Hare' in season two of the AMC series Preacher opposite Dominic Cooper. Produced by Seth Rogen, the series is based on the hit graphic novel of the same name.

Prior to that, Ruth was seen in the title role of Scott Graham's independent UK drama Iona.
