Meanwhile, in LAUSD, There is a Push to Move the School Year Back Beyond Labor Day
Samohi Students on the first day of school last year. SMMUSD resumes August 23, while LAUSD began on August 16th. There is a push to move the beginning of school back beyond labor day; i.e. in September, where it traditionally was for over a century.
Two followup notes to our story last week entitled "Outsider Named as New Samohi Principal."
One is we received a very nice note from a parent of a Cincinnati area pupil, who spoke well of Dr. Antonio Shelton, named as Samohi's new school principal. She writes:
" Our loss is your gain and we are so saddened to be losing Dr. Shelton," she says. "I am SURE he will do great things for your very large, diverse school district. Our kids thoroughly enjoy him! By the way, Mason, Ohio is a suburb in Cincinnati, Ohio... a great city to raise a family. Maybe you should check out Cincinnati sometime and see how friendly we are out here... We enjoy visiting your area and taking in your lovely beaches and your chaos. ...A Saddened Mom of one Indian Hill graduate under Dr. Shelton, and a current Indian Hill Freshman and Junior."
Ant this note from the Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District:
"Dear Samohi parents and guardians,
As you are aware, SMMUSD announced Dr. Antonio Shelton as the new principal of Samohi.Dr. Shelton is relocating from out of state and we are accommodating this transition. We expect him to start sometime in mid-September and we will have a firm date soon.
In the interim, we have asked Ms. Diana Garcia to serve as a short-term interim principal. Diana served many years at Samohi as teacher and assistant principal. She worked as an administrator in a two Local Districts in LAUSD, as a middle school principal in LAUSD and a middle/high school principal in Huntington Park. Her familiarity with Samohi will be of benefit to the House Principals and the staff during this period of transition. Ms. Garcia began on Monday, August 15th ready to support staff and serve students and parents.

In Santa Monica, the school year begins this Tuesday, August 23, 2016. Los Angeles Unified School District began it's year on August 16th, last week. Some LAUSD parents think this is too early, and have begun a movement to have the board consider beginning the 2018 school year after Labor Day. The early start gives a district an advantage on statewide testing, but requires students to start school when it is still quite warm, often over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
