Capitol Democrats' failure to fund road repair contracts bankrupts 40 year-old company

The consequences of legislative inaction by Capitol Democrats have hit home for employees of the now-bankrupt construction company C.C. Myers Inc.

C.C. Myers Inc., one of California's highest-profile freeway builders, has filed for bankruptcy, ending a storied chapter in local construction.

The Rancho Cordova company, no longer associated with founder C.C. Myers, fell into financial difficulty in recent years. It became overleveraged as state highway repair and construction contracts dried up. (Sacramento Bee)

It might be shocking to most Californians who slam through the potholes in the middle of our neglected roadways everyday on the way to work that a highway repair company would go out of business because there wasn't enough work. But even though California has many of the worst stretches of roads in the nation, Democrats in control of the California legislature have not been able to muster the political willpower to do anything about it.

Governor Brown, noting the dire conditions of our roads, called a special session on transportation in 2015. Assembly Republicans, in response provided a plan to devote $6.6 billion dollars to fund projects that could have kept C.C. Myers Inc. in business.

More than a year into the special session, Democrats have failed to put together a comprehensive plan to fund transportation and refused to put the Assembly Republican transportation plan to a vote.

As all of the employees at C.C. Myers Inc. know, delayed action has REAL consequences. It's long past time for Capitol Democrats to make fixing our roads a priority.
