Assaulted an 11-year-old boy outside the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles
A homeless man who assaulted an 11-year-old boy outside the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles was sentenced today, June 30, to six years in state prison. The man, Raul Villalba Ocampo, 33, pleaded to one count of child abuse.
Last December, in 2015, the boy was standing outside of Walt Disney Concert Hall as part of a school field trip. Ocampo placed the boy in a chokehold and punctured his neck with a sharpened key, apparently a homemade weapon. He continued his assault until security personnel arrived and pulled him off.
Downtown Los Angeles has a large homeless population. Statistics show that of the homeless, approximately 38 percent are alcoholic, 26 percent are addicted to other substances, and 25 percent suffer from mental illness. As a general rule, the homeless are more often victims than perpetrators of crimes, but recently homeless individuals have been responsible for some serious crimes. This month a homeless illegal alien, Johnny Josue Sanchez, allegedly set fire to a building in Westlake, killing 5. Also Edric Dashell Gross, a man who's been homeless for over a decade, was found guilty of murdering two women in Santa Monica in 2001 and 2002.
