Girl Drowns Off Santa Monica Pier Saturday

Despite the best efforts of fire fighters, paramedics, LA County Lifeguards, and the hospital staff; a girl who was taken from the water drowning north of the Santa Monica pier Saturday, has died. It appears that she died at the hospital, of her injuries.

The SMFD refuses to release any information or confirm her death, due to "privacy laws" and the victims age. Below is the Department's press release from 3/26. It does hint that hypothermia was the cause of the female swimmers death:

On Saturday at 12:47 PM, Santa Monica Fire Department Paramedics, were called to the Santa Monica Beach, north of the pier, for a possible drowning. On scene, Santa Monica Firefighters worked with Los Angeles County Fire Department Life Guards to rescue one juvenile female, who was transported to Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center in critical condition.

Ultimately, numerous Life Guard Swimmers, 1 Life Guard boat, 1 County Fire Department Helicopter, Santa Monica Police, and Santa Monica Firefighters worked together to locate the victim and get medical attention.

Santa Monica Beaches and the Pier Received an influx of visitors due to warm temperatures, and the Easter Holiday weekend. Water temperatures however, still remain low.
