The Awareness Film Festival is a dynamic festival promoting the awareness of world issues. Bringing together filmmakers, artists, educators, environmentalists, alternative health practitioners and other industry professionals, the Awareness Film Festival aims to inspire the public through this engaging, entertaining and unique annual event in the film capital of the world. Themes represented in this year’s films include: green and eco-friendly living, homelessness, gang/felon reform, veteran’s issues, cancer survival, GMOs, marijuana policy reform, couch-surfing community, pilgrimages, mental health stories, vision loss, women’s issues; stories of hope, the arts, spirituality, and current events. Film presentations will be accompanied by filmmaker Q&A’s with talent in attendance.

Progressive Peace

On September 21, Hostelling International Santa Monica (HI-Santa Monica) is hosting Progressive Peace in celebration of Sleep For Peace, a Hostelling International USA (HI-USA) signature event in honor of the United Nations International Day of Peace. Introducing attendees to how International Day of Peace came to be, Progressive Peace will showcase countries from the continents of South America, Africa, Europe and Asia, and how they are affected by different stages of the “Right of Peoples to Peace.” You can join guests of the hostel as they progress through this mini global adventure, exploring different areas of the hostel, various global movements and crises, and developing their own sense of what “giving peace a chance” can be in our day-to-day lives. Progressive peace will culminate with a celebration in our courtyard, featuring international cuisine sampling, drinks, and music.

Visitors will be amazed as 3rd Street Promenade is transformed into a global village, where participants will experience sights, sounds, tastes, textures and fragrances from distant lands. Interactive booths display fun and educational items including clothing, pottery, artwork, artifacts, music, games, crafts and tasty samples from every continent. Enjoy live entertainment with music, dance and cultural demonstrations that will have participants dancing for joy in the streets of Santa Monica.
