Authorities say on February 26 at approximately 9 in the evening Malibu Search and Rescue received a call for two missing hikers in the Newton Canyon area of Malibu. They say the two hikers, an 18-year-old man from West Hills and a 17-year-old woman from Chatsworth, along with their small dog, set out for a hike at 3 in the afternoon from the Newton Canyon trailhead, off of Kanan Road. Once darkness fell around 6 p.m., and the weather turned cold and rainy, the hikers realized they were lost and called a parent, according to authorities. The parent notified Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station, whom in turn called the LASD Malibu Search and Rescue Team. Communication was lost with the two hikers when the two hikers’ cell phones lost charge.

Authorities say a helicopter was launched to assist in the search with the ground units when the weather turned cold and rainy, however, the low fog ceiling and poor visibility prevented the rescue helicopter from entering the area. They say after about an hour of searching in near-zero visibility conditions, the two hikers and their dog were finally located.
