Hearing Postponed in Venice Boardwalk Tragedy

A Los Angeles judge has postponed final arguments in the preliminary hearing of charges against a man who allegedly drove his car through crowds on the Venice Beach boardwalk last summer, killing a newlywed woman and injuring others.

Superior Court Judge Antonio Barretto rescheduled the arguments for Jan. 8 after defense attorney Philip Dube said Thursday that he had only just received transcripts of the hearing and was not ready to argue.

The hearing will determine whether defendant Nathan Campbell must stand trial on one count of murder, 16 counts of assault with a deadly weapon and 17 counts of hit-and-run.

Witnesses to the Aug. 3 tragedy say the driver maneuvered around barriers and intentionally aimed at tourists and vendors.

Thirty-two-year-old honeymooner Alice Gruppioni of Bologna, Italy, was killed.
