  • UCLA Football Is Thriving; Coach Is Staying

    Mitch Chortkoff|Dec 30, 2013

When several National Football League coaching openings became available last week UCLA's Jim Mora Jr. was prominently mentioned. His response was to say thanks but no thanks. Mora has concluded two spectacular years at UCLA. There were nine victories last season and 10 this season. UCLA beat USC both years. The Bruins routed Virginia Tech, 42-12 in last week's Sun Bowl, scoring 28 points in the fourth quarter. Mora said he's not one to hop onto a new job. He likes it here. And he's building som...

  • Dodgers Disappointed As Puig Arrested

    Dec 30, 2013

The Dodgers had a strong reaction last weekend upon learning that their young star, Yasiel Puig, had been arrested in Naples, Florida and charged with reckless driving. Puig was reported to be going 110 mph in a 70-mphzone. It was the second such offense for the 23-year-old outfielder who had a sensational major league debut last season. The Dodgers issued a press release expressing their disappointment in Puig and said the matter should be taken seriously....

    Dec 23, 2013

The Santa Monica-Venice Christmas Run drew more than 5,000 runners Dec 4 to one of the westside’s largest running events. Long-time organizer and local realtor Bruce Mitchell said the fees and requirements imposed by the city of Los Angeles and Santa Monica are getting more and more prohibitive. • Kobe Shouldn't Play Anymore This Season

    Mitch Chortkoff|Dec 23, 2013

The Lakers announced that Kobe Bryant will be out for six weeks with a broken bone in his left leg. Doctor Robert Klapper, ESPN radio's medical expert with a distinguished reputation in his field, told listeners that because the injury is on a lower extremity Kobe won't be able to train during the six weeks to get back into playing shape. Most likely, then, the Lakers can expect to be without the Kobe they've come to rely on for probably two months. Well, two months from now the Lakers are...

  • Jerry Priddy: The Player Who Inspired Maury Wills

    Fred Altieri|Dec 23, 2013

Maury Wills: "The players we looked up to and the players we wanted to be like were these older guys that played on Sundays who called themselves semi-pro. I don't know why semi-pro, they didn't get paid. "They had mixed-matched uniforms on, argyle socks under the stirrups. If they didn't get too drunk on Saturday night and they had enough players on Sunday, they had a game. And those were the guys we wanted to grow up and be like. "They just played on playgrounds and fields. There was no such...

  • Skaggs Happy To Be With Angels Again

    Mitch Chortkoff|Dec 16, 2013

Tyler Skaggs was thrilled to be drafted by the Angels in 2009, when he was the 17-year-old star pitcher at Santa Monica High. Quite simply, he had been an Angels fan. But in professional baseball there are often twists and turns in a career. The Angels traded Skaggs a year later to the Arizona DiamondBacks. Last week the Angels acquired Skaggs again. In reality, at age 22, the 6-foot-5 lefthander has shown more promise than results. He's been in demand. The DiamondBacks wanted him originally...

  • Maury Wills At Westfield, Culver City

    Fred Altieri|Dec 16, 2013

Maury Wills was born to be a Los Angeles Dodger. Eighty One years later he is still a Dodger, as sharp and as alert as during the 1960's when he altered the fundamentals of major league baseball with his speed and prowess on the base paths. Wills recently visited Culver City's Westfield Mall, signing autographs, talking baseball and even playing catch with some of the youngsters. He and Steve Yeager were on hand to meet and greet Dodger fans during the first stop of the 2013 Los Angeles Dodgers...

  • How Good Can The Clippers Be???

    Mitch Chortkoff|Dec 16, 2013

After the Clippers set a franchise record for victories in a season Vinny del Negro was fired as coach. There was the matter of the Clippers losing in the first round of the NBA playoffs. That was last season and this one began with Clippers management sending a very clear message. It was time for the Clippers to approach – and possibly win -- the first NBA championship in their history. Doc Rivers, leaving Boston after nine years, was hired as the coach who might change Clipper history. The t...

  • Samohi Takes Fourth In Basketball Tournament

    Mitch Chortkoff|Dec 9, 2013

Santa Monica High boys basketball has soared to remarkable heights in the long reign of James Hecht as coach. The Vikings reached the championship game of the state tournament at the conclusion of last season, and typical of Hecht’s reign they’ve come back with another highly competitive team despite the graduation of key players. Samohi hosts an annual early season tournament and a measure of the program’s success is the willingness of elite opponents to participate. So it was a strong field...

  • Money? No Problem: Dodgers Sign Wilson

    Mitch Chortkoff|Dec 9, 2013

The Detroit Tigers were mighty good last season except for the fatal flaw of not having a premier closer. It made a lot of sense when they negotiated with free agent Brian Wilson, who earned two championship rings with the San Francisco Giants, then helped the Dodgers last season. But Wilson then informed the Tigers he wasn’t going to join them. A few days later the Dodgers announced they had brought Wilson back with a one-year contract and a player option for 2015. They didn’t reveal a fin...

  • Stronger Opponents, Weak Defense Plague Lakers

    Mitch Chortkoff|Dec 9, 2013

When the Lakers lost to the Phoenix Suns Tuesday at Staples Center Coach Mike D’Antoni began the evening with his ninth different starting lineup in 21 games. The great Laker teams I covered in the past usually had set lineups and set substitution rotations. The players knew their roles. With roles changing game by game the defense suffers. It can take several years for teammates to learn where each other will be. This season the Lakers brought in a batch of good shooters who’d been cut by oth...

  • New USC Coach Must Recruit Remaining Players

    Mitch Chortkoff|Dec 2, 2013

There hasn't been a lot written about this, but I've been told there are an unusually high number of USC undergraduate football players eligible for the NFL draft. The number I've heard is 33. That's a lot. Some aren't likely to be high NFL draft choices but they provide depth at USC and they would be missed. Some have redshirted and that year counts toward NFL eligibility. If a player has been in the program for three years, even if one year he redshirted and didn't play, he's NFL eligible....

  • Neuheisel Gave UCLA Hundley

    Steve Finley|Dec 2, 2013

Former UCLA head football coach Rick Neuheisel was probably one of the most satisfied people in America after UCLA beat USC 35-17 Saturday night. Neuheisel recruited Brett Hundley three or four years ago to play for UCLA. Hundley was supposed to be the player who was going to put UCLA football back in the national spotlight. Against USC he showed why he was so highly recruited out of Chandler High School in Arizona. His performance against USC will go down as one of the best games played by a...

  • Dodgers Announce Spring Schedule

    Dec 2, 2013

The Dodgers announce their 2014 Spring Training schedule with their sixth season of Cactus League play beginning on Thursday, February 27 against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Camelback Ranch – Glendale, Arizona.. The Dodgers will play 24 Cactus League games this spring, in addition to an exhibition game against Team Australia in Sydney, Australia on Friday, March 21, the day before Los Angeles faces the Arizona Diamondbacks in MLB’s Opening Series on March 22-23 at the historic Sydney Cricket Ground. The Dodgers play 13 games at Camelback Ran...

  • Samohi Falls Short, But Program Looks Strong

    Mitch Chortkoff|Nov 25, 2013

Santa Monica High’s football season ended last week with a 42-10 loss at Lompoc in the second round of the CIF playoffs. But there’s reason for optimism. Samohi, after winning the Ocean League the last two seasons, finished second to Culver City this time, losing a 17-14 game in overtime. Samohi then won its first round playoff game. Despite inconsistent quarterback play as several players rotated at the position, Samohi compiled a 7-5 record. Coach Travis Clark has the program strong eno...

  • Kobe's New Contract Brings Excitement, Uncertainty

    Mitch Chortkoff|Nov 25, 2013

As the editor of this newspaper I urge my columnists to take a stand on issues. I don't tell them what stand to take, but merely let readers know their position. Readers have their opinions and want to compare them to yours. But today I find myself unable to take the same advice. Kobe Bryant has signed a two-year, $48.5 million contract with the Lakers and as the wisdom of the Lakers' move is debated nationally I can very clearly see both sides of the issue. First, the obvious benefits. Kobe,...

  • UCLA Loss Gives Arizona State South Title

    Steven Lieberman|Nov 25, 2013

The Arizona State Sun Devils will be playing in their first Pac-12 Championship, game as they defeated UCLA at the Rose Bowl on Saturday, 38-33. The Sun Devils got off to a quick start, running the ball six times for 67 yards on their first possession. QB Taylor Kelly scored the first touchdown in three minutes as he ran the ball in from the three-yard line to give his team a 7-0 advantage. On the Bruins first possession, they outdid the Sun Devils as QB Brett Hundley tossed a 42-yard bomb to Devin Lucien on the team’s first play to tie the s...

The Dodgers have announced their coaching staff for the 2014 season with manager Don Mattingly and nine coaches returning, Tim Wallach shifting roles to become bench coach and the addition of Lorenzo Bundy as the club’s third base coach. General Manager Ned Colletti made the announcement. 2014 Dodger Coaching Staff: Don Mattingly – Manager (fourth season) Lorenzo Bundy – Third Base coach (first season) Chuck Crim – Bullpen Coach (second season) Rick Honeycutt – Pitching Coach (ninth season) Davey Lopes – First Base Coach (fourth season) Mark Mc...

  • Everybody Wants A Friend Like Matt Barnes

    Bosmat Eynav|Nov 18, 2013

Matt Barnes is one of the strongest defensive players in the NBA, excelling through his entire career with his determination, efficiency, his blocking abilities, mental resilience and mostly by how much he cares about his friends. With his strong will, he is there for them at any cost. The Clippers' forward from UCLA will be there for his team members even when he has to sacrifice himself, his money and his time in the game. He's truly extraordinary. Unfortunately, all these important qualities...

  • Laker Topics Dominate My Mind

    Mitch Chortkoff|Nov 18, 2013

  • Will USC Keep Orgeron? Maybe

    Mitch Chortkoff, Sports Editor|Nov 11, 2013

After USC routed California Saturday, scoring 62 points, I began hearing from Trojan fans who asked the same question. They wanted to know if Ed Orgeron has a chance of remaining as the Trojans' coach beyond this season. I consider it a worthwhile topic because I've respected Orgeron since he became a Trojan assistant coach, became a head coach at Mississippi, then returned to the Trojans as an assistant and recruiting co-ordinator. It's obvious he's been an improvement over Lane Kiffin this...

  • Newcomers Help Kings Win

    Steven Lieberman, Observer Reporter|Nov 11, 2013

The Los Angeles Kings have been bringing their “A-Game,” playing without the services of sharp-shooters Jarret Stoll and Jeff Carter. Since both players have been out of the lineup with injuries, the Kings still managed to pull out victories against the Buffalo Sabres and Vancouver Canucks. Since the Sabres are in last place in the Eastern Conference, the win over the Canucks had more meaning since they are currently battling for the fourth spot in the Pacific Division in the Western Conference. It seemed like everything was clicking for the...
