  • SM Set to Launch Bike Share Program by 2015

    Nov 24, 2014

In a city known for being very bike friendly, there seems to be plenty of support in Santa Monica for a city-wide bike share program that is designed for residents to take short bike rides or to bridge the gaps in the transit system. West Hollywood resident Israel Garabino usually rides his bike from his home to his job in Santa Monica, and so for him a bike share program in the city makes perfect sense. "The weather's perfect for it. The people are ready, in terms of drivers respecting...

    Steven Lieberman, Observer Reporter|Nov 24, 2014

The Verdi Chorus triumphed in their presentation of their fall concerts titled “Distant Lands” this past weekend at the acoustically-sound First United Methodist Church in Santa Monica. The chorus is one of the jewels of the Los Angeles opera scene and showed the audience why as they presented two flawless performances. The concerts honored Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky’s retirement after 40 years of service to Southern California. Musical director/conductor Anne Marie Ketchum had Yaroslavsky, a big lover and supporter of opera, take the stage...

  • It's The Jim Mora Era At UCLA

    Mitch Chortkoff, Sports Editor|Nov 24, 2014

I'm old enough to remember Red Sanders' impact when he coached football at UCLA. And the dynasties of John McKay and Pete Carroll at USC, among others. In this city with a remarkable cross-town rivalry the school with the more prominent coach often prevails. That coach currently is Jim Mora at UCLA. Mora has coached UCLA for three years and the Bruins, who couldn't beat the Trojans for a decade, have won the last three meetings. The latest was the Bruins' convincing 38-20 victory over the...

  • MOVIE REVIEW: PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR

    debbie lynn elias|Nov 24, 2014

As has become crystal clear over the past several years, DreamWorks Animation more than gives Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar a run for their money when it comes to animated features. With it's own distinctive styling of rich, vibrant colors like those seen in "The Croods" or "Turbo", character and background design are drawn with a slightly skewed shaping and outlining that have a touchstone quality to Saturday morning cartoons, while action and adventure is non-stop, high octane, high...
