    Sep 15, 2014

As Eileen Brown and her dog stand on a bluff at Santa Monica’s Palisades Park and survey endless miles of sparkling blue ocean, clear skies and shimmering sandy beaches, she ponders how life could possibly get any better in this corner of paradise. “Really, it seems just about perfect,” the Los Angeles woman concludes. There’s a picturesque pier off in the distance with an old-fashioned merry-go-round that stands nearly side-by-side with the world’s first solar-powered Ferris wheel. The sun is shining brightly, the temperature is a pleasant...

  • Brick and Mortar Fined for Operating like a Nightclub

    Sep 15, 2014

A popular restaurant is on a 30-month probation for operating like a nightclub, officials said. Earlier this month, the owners of Brick and Mortar pleaded no contest to 14 misdemeanor counts of violating city permit laws and will pay roughly $7,000 in restitution to the city, not including thousands more in court fines. Located on the city’s bustling Main Street, Brick and Mortar is known not just as a restaurant, but also as a spot to throw a few back – sans dinner. But that’s not allowed if you don’t have the proper permits. The restaur...

Dear Editor, Anyone who follows the airport issue knows that while City staff does a great job actually running the airport, the City Council-appointed Airport commission is trying to strangle the airport out of existence with hostile leasing policies and other attempted restrictions. That’s why Measure D provides that no new restrictions can be imposed on the airport without a vote of the people. Most voters in Santa Monica support the airport. Measure D will make sure that the airport can’t be closed by “other means.” The City’s sponsored...

  • Vaccine Rates at SM Schools Like Those of South Sudan

    Sep 15, 2014

The vaccination rates in some wealthier areas of Los Angeles are as low as those in developing countries -- such as Chad and South Sudan -- and could be contributing to disease outbreaks in the region, according to an investigation by the Hollywood Reporter (Baum, Hollywood Reporter, 9/10). California parents can opt out of vaccinating their children by filing a personal belief exemption. In one of the wealthier regions in the Los Angeles area -- which includes Beverly Hills, Malibu, Marina del Rey, Santa Monica and West Hollywood, among other...

MonkeyParking May be Banned from SM MonkeyParking made headlines in June, when the San Francisco City Attorney sent the tech start-up a letter asking the company to cease operations in the city or face possible litigation. The app, which allows users to auction off public parking spots to the highest bidder, was violating city and state law, the letter said. The app company – now based in San Francisco – decided to take MonkeyParking south to traffic-clogged Santa Monica. Santa Monica might slam the brakes on the venture before the app eve...

  • MOVIE REVIEW: TUSK

    debbie lynn elias|Sep 15, 2014

I have long been an admirer of Kevin Smith's filmmaking ethic; although not always a fan of some of his films. He has taken the bull by the horns - in this case, the walrus by the tusks - and ignored the naysayers, to do what he wants to do - make movies. Inexpensive and cost effective by filmmaking standards, Smith's films are all stories that he wants to tell and told the way he wants to tell them. As a result, he and his work have developed a core following that guarantees investment money...
