  • Kevin McKeown Responds to Allegation He, or Another Council Member, was "For Sale"

    Kevin McKeown, SM City Councilmember|Aug 27, 2016

We are all pleased with the progress being made on gaining local control of the land we own at the airport. I think it's worth noting, though, as I did earlier this week in a letter to the local newspaper, that this progress came about because of the united work of all seven Councilmembers. Grossly inaccurate materials have been circulated in some Santa Monica neighborhoods alleging that the Council was split on this, and even that one Councilmember in particular was "for sale." The proof to...

  • Pres. Obama is Wasting America's Energy Windfall

Dan Kish, Institute for Energy Research|Aug 27, 2016

Oil imports could soon be a thing of the past. That's the main takeaway from a new report from Nordic consulting firm Rystad. Researchers estimated the total recoverable oil reserves still buried under American soil. The final figure is astonishing: 264 billion barrels -- more than any other nation in the world. Unlocking these reserves would generate tremendous benefits for the economy and move America towards full energy independence. Yet the White House has repeatedly stood in the way. Time...

  • CDPH Urges Caution Related to Seasonal Blue-green Algae Blooms

    California Dept of Public Health|Aug 27, 2016

SACRAMENTO – California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Director and State Public Health Officer Dr. Karen Smith urges recreational water users to avoid close contact with water bodies containing blue-green algae. Since June of this year, blue-green algae blooms have been identified in more than two dozen freshwater reservoirs, lakes and streams statewide. A list of current algal blooms is available online. The state recommends that people and pets avoid contact with affected bodies of w...

  • Shkreli defends Mylan for Raising EpiPen Price 600%

An estimated 1 in 13 children in the United States is affected by an allergy to foods like milk, eggs, peanuts, fish and shellfish-a figure that is steadily growing, for reasons that are not clear. At least one US Senator, Amy Klobacher, is calling for the Federal Trade Commission to investigate Mylan, which has a virtual lock on sudden allergy relief through it's product, EpiPen. It is a pocket size medical device that is to allergy relief, what a defibrilator is for a heart attack. Sanofi's...

  • US Navy Ship Fires Warning Shots at Iranian Navy Vessel

    Samuel Alioto|Aug 27, 2016

US Officials confirmed that the USS Squall fired three warning shots at an Iranian Revolution Guard small boat only 200 yards away. Charging at a US Navy ship can only be regarded as a provocation in maritime terms; an invitation to shoot missiles. The incident happened Thursday, at 11:45 am PST. The vessels were probably revolutionary Guard vessels. Whereas the regular military defends Iran's borders and maintains internal order, according to the Iranian constitution, the Revolutionary Guard...

  • City Council votes to close Airport Again; FAA Says Good Luck With That, Guys

For the third time the Santa Monica City Council has voted to close it's 100-year-old airport, Cloverfield. Residents living nearby hate the airport, despite the fact that there has never been a fatal accident there, because of the noise and smoke it produces. It is also rather close to homes. Don't be fooled. The Council's action is largely symbolic, because the Federal Aviation administration has a lease on the land which is restricted to aviation until at least 2023. Anyway, the city is...
