At the Santa Monica Observer, we received not one dollar in city funds for advertising the last two years. No candidate this year has placed even one ad with us yet. Trust me, we have no friends at City Hall either. Santa Monica officials even try to avoid me when they run into me at Ralphs. The same could be said for most of my old friends. Is this anything to be proud of? Probably not. But at least it's true. Anyway, with no axe to grind and no dog in the fight, we present our recommendation...

I was Steve Miller's first boss. He wrote an anti-Freshman Seminar for me. This was long after he was in third grade, and apparently eating glue, according to a third grade teacher recently suspended by SMMUSD, the local school district. "He was a creepy loner," she recalled. https://www.spin.com/2018/10/stephen-miller-teacher-suspended-ate-glue/ Then as now, I publish a local print newspaper in Santa Monica, CA called the Observer. In 2002, a 16 year old kid named Steve Miller came to me and...

It’s shaping up to be a weird and wild election season, despite the fact that the City Council incumbents will walk into their 40th terms as City Council members. Surprise! It may not count, as the redistricting lawsuit marches on. Armen Melkonians is a local rabble rouser (my term), founder of Residocracy on Facebook, “which has grown quite a bit, we’re getting more readership and it continues to grow. And it goes to show you that people are very concerned about crime, because most of the p...
The digital age has rewritten the script for (some would call it disrupted) industries from newspapers to automobiles. What about direct mail, those advertisements on pieces of actual paper one sorts through twice a day, once at work and again at home? One would imagine that business would be affected the most. Enter David Fink, a 20-year veteran of consumer startups. Fink describes himself as falling in love with entrepreneurship in the age of technology. Fink thought he could apply the marketi...

He has lived for 100 years and in that time, escaped the Nazis, started a successful textile business, and funded a synagogue in Santa Monica. Mostly, Jack Nomberg is thankful for everything. Nomberg was born in Poland in 1918, the year World War I ended. The battle lines shifted very little in that war, so when the Germans marched into Poland and took Warsaw in 2 weeks, most people were caught flat footed. Nomberg, then 22, went to Siberia, where he survived the war. Later, he came to Ohio,...

5 years ago, Nicole Levings graduated from Sheffield Hallam University with a degree in business and marketing, and began her career in advertising. She has always worked with "creative agencies on the client services side, where I developed a passion for brand," she says. "Ultimately brand strategy and creative, and that's where I've stayed ever since." "Back in the day, people would call a marketer and say, we need a brochure, and they would just do it. There was no rhyme or reason no...

Excerpts of an interview with Sean Goldfaden, a Member at WeWork in Santa Monica, the CEO of CoEfficient Labs. CoEfficient Labs is a Growth Advertising Agency for Series-A Startups. It's based at We Work's offices on Third Street and Arizona in Santa Monica. While there are many definitions of growth hacking, mostly it's a mindset. I call it a "funnel mindset." Conceptually, internet sales pass through a big funnel. People first have to become aware of your business for them to convert. Say a Po...
Beginning in September, the City will run a 16 month program to study the feasibility of allowing electric rental scooters on City sidewalks and streets. Bird and Lime companies created controversy by simply renting the scooters on City streets without obtaining any prior permits. Their business plan was that they would get the permits later. Bird paid a $300,000 fine to the City in January, and agreed to distribute 22,500 free helmets to riders. The scooters can travel at about 18 miles per...
The City Council is considering amending the municipal code to allow scooters to be parked on City sidewalks. At its June 12th meeting, the Council will consider an amendment to the code. As part of overall mandates, Santa Monica encourages electric and other less polluting transportation alternatives. As a practical matter, many riders who rent scooters from Bird, Lime and other purveyors, leave the vehicles on sidewalks, where the next rider finds them. While the scooters are popular with...
I sat down with the principals behind Welcome to the Men's Group, to ask them what the movie was about, other than a bunch of middle aged men taking their clothes off and discussing their feelings. OK, fine, actually I spoke to Joseph Culp and Scott Ben-Yasher by phone. Here our my notes from our conversation. Q. How did you become interested in men's feelings? Culp: Scott and I have participated in mens groups for many years and that's how we met. This was years before we decided to make a...
When I'm bored I run on the beach. There's always something new in Santa Monica, and it's usually near the 105 year old Pleasure Pier. DrumDancepray.org had a colorful flag display flapping in the wind. Their website says that their organization is dedicated to curing war, disease, poverty, homelessness and disease, by getting all 195 countries of the world to sit on the beach every night and beat bongos, or something. Ok, fine. Their website actually says their mission is "to invite all 195...
Santa Monicans for City Council Term Limits has begun actively circulating a petition to put a charter amendment before voters that would limit city councilmembers to three 4 year terms. "Since this is a charter amendment, we need 15% of the voters in Santa Monica to sign the petition. That's a very high bar, and it's a short deadline," says Nancy Coleman. She added that her petition had been well received by voters she met in front of the Post Office on the 1200 block of Wilshire. "Those...
When you're elected to City Council, it's lifetime position. Herb Katz, Christine Reed, Ken Genser and had to be carried out practically. They all died on the Council. The latter 2 had parks named after them by their similarly long serving survivors. Santa Monicans for City Council Term Limits has begun raising money to put term limits on the ballot. The measure would restrict city leaders to no more than 3 four year terms. With the exception of Ted Winterer, the entire 7 member council have...

The preschool was somewhat controversial. The perception was it's primary purpose is to service the needs of City Staff, who by and...
Over numerous resident objections, the Santa Monica City Council has turned down an appeal from a decision to allow a 20 student preschool at 2953 Delaware Avenue. They did add about 60 conditions to the preschool, intended to abate noise, traffic and the like. The Gandara Park neighborhood mobilized against the proposed preschool. Hi, I'm a resident of SM in the Gandara (formerly known s Stewart Park) Neighborhood. "200 SM residents geared up to attend and support our request for a denial of a...
In contrast to the rest of the country, local weather was a balmy 53 degrees Farenheit in Santa Monica Sunday night as residents and visitors welcomed 2018. Santa Monica had a mostly quiet New Years Eve 2017-2018. Some say that on evenings such as New Years Eve, Uber, Lyft and other ridesharing apps have transformed LA, since people are able to stay out late and drink, then return safely and legally home. The SMPD tweeted: "Whether it is drugs or alcohol, if someone is impaired, they're a...
Ridesharing company Lyft has erected a billboard on Hollywood Walk of Fame, recognizing just how cool its drivers are. "Thanks to the writers, the strivers the role models. We know you're more than just drivers. So no matter what you're driving toward, we'll help you get there." Lyft has long played second fiddle to Uber, which is regarded as the highest valued privately held corporation in the world. Uber is valued at over $100 billion, while Lyft is valued around $7.5 billion. Like many...
