Gas Leak in Venice and Ocean Park Determined to be Natural

Update, 3 pm: After investigating multiple reports of a methane or other oder in the 500 block of Venice Blvd, the Los Angeles Fire Department and the Southern California Gas Company, determined the source of the leak to be natural. The investigation began at 10 am approximately, when mutliple reports of people smelling gas came in. But it was determined to be natural, perhaps methane from the Pacific Ocean. At 3 pm the investigation concluded.

This from the City of Santa Monica late Friday morning:

SM Alert - There have been multiple reports of the smell of natural gas in Santa Monica and West Los Angeles. At this time, there are no reports of natural gas incidents or chemical spills. Santa Monica Fire is conducting surveillance and working with the SoCalGas to investigate the issue.

If you smell a natural gas odor, hear the hissing sound of gas escaping or see other signs of a leak:

REMAIN calm.

DON'T light a match, candle or cigarette.

DON'T turn electrical appliances or lights on or off or use any device that could cause a spark.

IMMEDIATELY EVACUATE the area, and from a safe location, call SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200 24 hours a day, seven days a week; or call 911.
